Norwalk River Rowing’s youth racing teams won seven medals at the Cooper Cup on April 27th.

The regatta featured 52 clubs competing on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey. The non-varsity events were held in “flights”, with medals awarded for first in each flight. Varsity events were held in championship format, with qualifying heats and a final. Medals were awarded to the top three finishers in the championship events. The races were 2,000 meters long. Individual competitors were restricted to competing in one event. The weather was cooperative, with mostly sunny conditions and a moderate cross / tail wind.

Norwalk won four medals in championship events: golds in the men’s varsity lightweight double and men’s varsity four plus coxswain (which won by 11.7 seconds), a silver in the men’s lightweight four plus coxswain and a bonze in the men’s varsity double. Norwalk also won golds in the women’s novice four plus coxswain, men’s JV single and men’s JV four plus coxswain. While the only medals awarded in flights were for first, there were three additional strong novice second-place finishes: the women’s novice eight and two men’s novice four plus coxswain.

Next Sunday the youth racing teams head across the Sound to the Long Island Junior Rowing Championships.
