Rowing into a tough headwind from the north and an equally strong current, the Norwalk River Rowing Association’s Youth team won five medals, including three golds, and the Masters team won two gold medals, in the Head of the Riverfront Regatta in Hartford on Sunday.

Gold medals went to Kris Petreski, who won the men’s first junior single by 1.2 seconds; Kris, Chris Martensson, Oliver Peacock and Kaare Andersen in the men’s first junior quad (by 23.55 seconds); and Oliver, Kevin Lenihan, Brad Spiewak, and Matt Rauccio, with Jamie Fagen as coxswain, in the men’s second junior four-plus.

Chris and Kaare won a bronze medal in the men’s first junior double.

For the girls team, Natalie Partlow and Kelsey Ritchey teamed to win a bronze in the women’s first junior double.

In all, Coach Drew Combs’ girls team entered eight boats in seven events; Coach Yuri Kolomiets boys team entered 15 boats in seven events.

In the Masters competition, the women’s quad of Jennifer Nicasio, Lisa Gregory, Katherine Gallagher and Lisa Sanders won a gold medal.

The mixed eight plus also won a gold medal. That crew consisted of Juliet Brocki, Laura Case, Cliff Desouza, Don Loomis, Bob Walker, Phil Negus, Elisabeth Stonehill, and Peggy Danneman, with Malcolm Watson as coxswain.

The next regatta is the Head of the Housatonic on Saturday in Shelton.
