Twenty-seven rowers, both youth and Masters, from the Norwalk River Rowing Association are off to Boston this weekend to race in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta.
They will be among 11,000 athletes competing in 1,900 boats in the two-day event, which takes place on the Charles River. In all, seven boats from Norwalk River Rowing Association will be competing.
Amongst the youth rowers, coach Drew Combs’ girls team of Jessica Magnoli, Natalie Partlow, Victoria Markow and Kelsey Ritchey, with Kailyn Kiefer as coxswain, will race in Women’s Youth 4-plus on Sunday.
For coach Yuri Kolomiets boys team, Oliver Peacock, Brad Spiewak, Matt Rauccio and Kevin Lenihan, with Jamie Fagan as coxswain, will compete in the Men’s Youth 4-plus.
Oliver, Brad, Kevin, Matt and Jamie won a silver medal on Saturday in the boys second varsity 4-plus at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta in Shelton.
Dane Crameri and Mitchell Ukropina, and Christopher Martensson and Kaare Andersen, will race for Norwalk River in the Men’s Youth Double.
Chris and Kaare, along with Ryan Purdy and Ben Hufnagel, won a bronze medal Saturday in the boys first varsity quad at the Head of the Housatonic.
In the Men’s Youth Singles, Kris Petreski is entered for Norwalk River.
Ryan, Ben and Sabrina Pastorello will travel to Boston with the team as alternates.
Masters Rowers will be competing on Saturday, the opening day of the event.
The Senior Masters Women’s 4-plus of Juliet Brocki, Laura Case, Elisabeth Stonehill, Peggy Danneman and Malcolm Watson as coxswain will be the first Norwalk River Rowing boat to compete on Saturday morning.
Later Saturday afternoon, one of our longtime masters rowers, Jan Gaus will be living his dream – to race in the Head of the Charles with his son, Eric, in the Director’s Challenge Parent/Child double.
Two of our Masters men will be re-experiencing their college days. Don Loomis and Ford Smith will be joining some Georgetown buddies in a Senior Masters Men’s 4-plus in a Georgetown alumni boat.
