Norwalk River Rowing’s youth teams returned from their trip to the Princeton area last week-end with three ISA Sculling Championship Team Trophies: Varsity Mens Trophy, Large Team Mens Trophy, and Lightweight Mens Trophy, all awarded for the sculling events. All together, the men and women earned 7 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals.

The regatta featured 42 clubs competing over two days at Mercer Lake in New Jersey. The regatta was actually two regattas held together, the ISA Sculling Championships (a sculling regatta) and the Mercer Lake Sprints (the sweep events). The small boat sculling events were held Friday evening, with the rest of the events held on Saturday. Most of the events were held in “flights”, with medals awarded in each flight and times not directly comparable between flights due to floating starts in windy conditions. Large boat varsity events were held in championship format, with qualifying heats and a final. Flights were generally about 1,500 meters, with the championship events started at 2,000 meters. The weather was for the most part cooperative, although many of Saturday’s races were held in a strong, cold cross-wind. The parents christened a new set of grills, with a number of participants suggesting that the burgers tasted even better than usual!

Norwalk won one medal in a championship event, a gold in the men’s lightweight sweep four plus coxswain. Norwalk also brought home golds in the men’s varsity single, men’s varsity double, men’s lightweight double, men’s second varsity double and two men’s second varsity sweep fours plus coxswain. Norwalk’s silver medals were awarded for the men’s lightweight double, men’s lightweight quad, two men’s second varsity quads and the men’s novice eight plus coxswain, while its bronze medals were earned for the men’s varsity double, men’s second varsity double, women’s novice eight plus coxswain and men’s novice quad.

The youth teams head back to New Jersey this week-end for the Cooper Cup.
