Seven Norwalk Rowers Finish Second in the Nation at 2023 Youth Rowing National Championships in Sarasota

  • After a strong showing at Northeast Regionals in May, 25 young athletes from Norwalk River Rowing club qualified for the 2023 USRowing Youth National Championships, in Sarasota, Florida earlier this month, besting some of the largest crew teams across the country.

2023 North East Regional Champions

  • 25 NRRA athletes in 7 boats qualified for Nationals this year (Wilton Rowers Head to Nationals), besting some of the largest crew teams across the country. Dominating the competition, the NRRA team showcased its exceptional talent and dedication, with 10 of the competing 12 NRRA boats medaling and securing an enviable medal kitty of four gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

    • Sophia Blessing (WHS ’23), Ella Carbonaro (WHS ’25): Women’s Youth 4x, Bronze

    • Cash Worthington (WHS ’25): Men’s U17 4x, Gold
    • Anna Coppola, Savona Bocchino, and Mackenzie Mitchell (all WHS ‘25): Women’s U17 4x, Silver
    • Evan McDonnell (WHS ’23): Qualified for Nationals
  • Under the expertise and strategic guidance of coaches coaches Bob Florio, Vinny Houston and Ford Smith, and head coach Steve Quagliano, the former US Olympic coach, this team has evolved incredibly since 2022 when two boats qualified for Nationals, to this year’s entry of seven boats.

2015

  • Two Norwalk rowers compete in the World Junior Rowing Championships in Rio de Janiero: Kris Petreski, rowing for the United States in the boys quad, and Nicole Vacas, competing for Ecuador in the girls single. Our boys head coach, Yuri Kolomiets, served as Nicole’s coach.
  • Silver medal in the boys pair at the Club National Championships in Bethel, Ohio.
  • Six boats qualify for the Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida.
  • Four graduating seniors head off to row at Division I programs for which they were recruited.

  • Fifth place at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
  • Gold medal in the under 17 double at the 132nd Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
  • Gold medals in the under 16 double and the under 16 single at the Club National Championships in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
  • Five boats qualify for the Youth National Championships in Sacramento, California.
  • One graduating senior heads off to row at a Division I program for which he was recruited.
